학창 시절 중학교 때 인기가 대단했다. 내가 지나가면 후배들이 플래카드를 들고 따라오면서 사진을 찍었다. 그땐 내가 <늑대의 유혹>의 주인공이라도 되는 줄 알았다. 나의 아이돌 데뷔 전부터 김현중 선배를 닮았다는 말을 많이 들었다. 선배는 나의 롤모델이다. ‘엑스맨’에 나오는 모습을 보면서 ‘저게 정말 남자고, 연예인이지’라고 생각했다. 지금 소속사인 DSP의 오디션을 본 것도 김현중 선배의 길을 따라가기 위해서였다. 선배와 처음 만났을 때, 야마시타 토모히사를 닮은 선배가 나더러 야마시타 토모히사를 닮았다고 말했다. 오디션 합격 순전히 외모 때문이다. 무반주로 ‘Nothing Better’를 부르다 음 이탈까지 났는데 오디션에 합격했으니까 말이다. 하지만 잘생기기만 해서는 아이돌 가수로 성공할 수 없다는 걸 깨달은 후 연습을 정말 열심히 했다. 그런데 한 가지 놀라운 사실. 나를 ‘꽃 비주얼’이라 부르는 나의 팬들도 하나같이 다 예쁘고 귀엽다. 신의 선물 일본에서 자기 소개를 할 때 하는 멘트가 있다. “와따시와 비주얼 멤버 데쓰, 차밍 포인트와 젠부데쓰(비주얼을 담당하고 있습니다. 매력 포인트는 전부입니다).” 콤플렉스 딱히 없다. 굳이 찾자면 다크 서클 정도? 아, 그러고 보니 수염이 너무 잘 자라는 게 불만이라면 불만이다. 음악 방송 녹화를 한 번 하면 면도는 기본 세 번을 해야 한다.
School Days: I was really popular back in junior high. When I passed, juniors would carry placards and follow me around taking pictures. At that time I felt like the male lead in the movie "Temptation of Wolves". My Idol: Even before my debut I heard many comments that I look like Kim Hyun Joong-sunbaenim. He is my role model. When I saw him in the show "X-man", I thought "this is a real man, and an artiste." The reason I auditioned at my current company, DSP, is also because I am following in the footsteps of Kim Hyun Joong-sunbaenim. The first time I met him, he said I looked like Yamashita Tomohisa, who in turn looks like him. The reason I even passed the audition at all was all due to my looks - I sang "Nothing Better" without any instrumental accompaniment and even went off-key but I still passed. But after I thought about it, I realised that an idol singer cannot succeed based just on his looks, so I really practised very very hard after that. However I realised a surprising truth - the fans who call me "flower visual" are all pretty and cute. A Gift from the Gods: My self introduction in Japan - "Watashiwa bisual menba desu. chamingu pointo wa zenbu desu (I am the visual member. Everything is my charming point.)" Complex: Practically nothing. Well if I HAVE to pick one, it will be dark eye circles? Ah, and my facial hair grows really fast, it's really annoying. I have to basically shave 3 times for everytime I go record music shows.
