A-JAX's Jaehyung has become the actor that he had dreamed of becoming even before his debut as a singer. In one breath, he shot right to the role of the lead actor via web drama "Vampire's Flower", and even though it's not a magnificient showing, he has steadily taken his first step towards the path.
"Vampire's Flower" is adapted from a vastly popular web-novel by the same name. The existence of the original work is both a source of anticipation and apprehension. Results will either be "Above Average" or "disappointting" to fans of the original work. To actors that have to act in such a drama adaptation, there is no greater burden than this anxiety. It's the same for Jaehyung whose first drama outing is through "Vampire's Flower".
"The original work is very popular. Actually, when I first received the audition offer, I really had doubts about being cast as the lead role of Louis. Not only is it my first drama attempt, I was worried about spoiling the adaptation since the original work is so popular. Even though I was told that I share many similarities with the character, there are still many parts which I had to digest. I felt pressured and felt like I needed to do well enough to satisfy the viewers. Hence I really threw myself into acting lessons and worked tirelessly to prepare for it."
"Vampire's Flower" is the story of a fantasy romance between a handsome vampire and a high-school girl. It is a set-up that if not balanced carefully, easily slips into "cheesy". Everytime Jaehyung brought this up, he could not shake off this part too.
"Actually, I felt this when I was acting out the role too (laughs). When I was first casted for this character, the producer told me 'It's so cheesy, you're going to lose feeling in all your limbs. Be prepared for it.' He also told me that acting out the role of a vampire, someone not a human, is difficult. While reciting the cheesy lines, I actually did get goosebumps in all my limbs too. There are lines such as 'Would you become my slave?'. I could see my fellow actors' lips twitching as they watched too. (laughs)."
It was such an embarassing drama, but actually it was something else that his fans' attention was on. Yes, the kiss scenes!
"There was many kiss scenes. The fans even said 'Our oppa kisses well' (laughs). You have to (do retakes to) shoot from various angles, right? I think I must have done like 50 takes. After that, everything seemed to be nothing in comparison."
An idol acting? Before Jaehyung, there are many precedents so the masses probably thinks lightly of them, that they are just diving into it for fun or just to challenge themselves. However, Jaehyung's passion for acting is real.
"In most people's minds, there's already a preconception of the original work, so it's hard to live up to their expectations. Because it's my first time, I really prepared a lot. I received many acting lessons, and put my greatest effort into it. I also studied by watching movies and dramas."
Actually, before Jaehyung became part of A-JAX, he had wanted to become an actor. Actors on TV who were originally singers gave him the courage, and as he watched dramas, he thought and dreamt of what sort of roles he would like to try.
"Being an actor was my first dream. While learning to act, I started to like Kim Hyunjoong-sunbaenim. So I went to audition at DSP. Of course, I wanted to become a singer too. I wanted to become a multi-talented artiste. I am composing songs and writing lyrics myself, and also receiving acting lessons. I want to do roles like Kim Soo Hyun-sunbaenim's "Do Minjun" in "He who came from the Stars" and Lee Minho-sunbaenim's "Kim Tan" in "The Heirs". Romance-themed dramas are the ones that can most receive love from the female audience, isn't it? (laughs). I like warm and touching dramas, that's why I want to try acting in such dramas. I am also diligently looking through scenerios now."
Among the numerous acting idols, Jaehyung's role-model is JYJ's Kim Jaejoong. According to Jaehyung, it's because he does not want to cast aside either acting or music.
"Kim Jaejoong-sunbaenim is my role model. He both composes and writes lyrics. I wanted MBC's 'Triangle' recently and thought that I have much to learn from him."

[OSEN=박정선 기자] 그룹 에이젝스의 재형이 가수 데뷔 전부터 갈망했던 또 하나의 꿈 배우가 됐다. 그는 웹드라마 '뱀파이의 꽃'을 통해 단숨에 주인공에 발탁됐고, 화려하진 않지만 차근차근 첫 발을 디디고 있다.
'뱀파이어의 꽃'은 마니아를 가진 동명의 소설을 원작으로 한다. 원작의 존재는 기대와 우려를 모두 안는 것과 같다. '평타' 이상의 결과물 혹은 원작팬들의 실망을 사는 결과물이다. 이러한 작품 속에서 연기해야 하는 배우의 부담감은 그것이 기대든 우려든 클 수밖에 없다. '뱀파이의 꽃'으로 처음 배우가 된 재형의 경우도 그랬다.
"인기가 많은 원작이었어요. 사실 처음 오디션 제의가 들어왔는데 주인공 역할 루이 캐릭터라고 하더라고요. 연기 첫 도전인데다가 인기 있는 소설에 폐를 끼치지 않을까 걱정이 먼저 앞섰어요. 비슷하게라도 소화해야하는데. 부담감, 만족시켜드려야한다는 생각 때문에요. 그래도 열심히 연기 레슨 꾸준히 받고 준비했어요."
'뱀파이어의 꽃'은 꽃미남 뱀파이어와 여고생의 사랑을 그리는 판타지 로맨스다. 자칫 '오글'거릴 수 있는 설정이다. 이를 표현하는 재형 또한 이 '오글'거림에서는 벗어날 수 없었다.
"저도 사실 연기를 하면서 느꼈어요(웃음). 처음 제작사 대표님이 캐스팅 됐을 때 '오글거리고 손발이 없어질 거다. 알고 있어라' 미리 이야기를 하셨어요. 뱀파이어라는, 인간이 아닌 연기를 하기도 어려울 거고요. 오글거리는 멘트를 하면서 저도 사실 손발이 없어졌어요. '나의 노예가 돼 주겠나?' 이런 대사들이요. 상대배우도 보면서 입꼬리가 실룩실룩 하더군요(웃음)."
이토록 낯간지러운 드라마이지만, 사실 그의 팬들이 주목한 장면은 따로 있었다. 바로 재형의 키스신이다.
"키스신이 많았어요. '우리 오빠는 키스를 잘해' 하시더군요(웃음). 여러 각도에서 찍잖아요. 50번은 찍었던 것 같아요. 그러다보니 나중엔 아무렇지도 않게 되더라고요."
아이돌의 연기? 재형 전에도 많은 사례가 있었기에 대중에겐 쉽게 생각될 수도 있는 부분이다. 잠시동안의 외도나 무모한 도전 정도로. 그러나 연기에 대한 재형의 열정은 진지했다.
"원작에 대한 기대치가 있기 때문에 기대 이상으로 보여드리기가 어렵잖아요. 첫 도전이기도 해서 준비를 많이 했어요. 연기 수업도 많이 받았고, 연기에 매진을 했죠. 영화, 드라마들도 모니터링하며 공부했어요."

그는 사실 에이젝스가 되기 전부터 배우가 되고 싶었다. TV에 나오는 가수 출신 배우들이 그에게 용기를 줬고, 드라마를 보며 어떤 역할을 해보고 싶다는 구체적인 꿈을 꾸기도 했다.
"배우 꿈이 먼저였어요. 연기를 준비하다 김현중 선배도 좋아하게됐죠. 그러다 DSP 오디션을 봤었어요. 물론 가수도 하고 싶었어요. 다재다능하게 하고 싶었거든요. 직접 작사, 작곡도 하고 있고, 연기 레슨도 받고 있어요. SBS '별에서 온 그대'의 김수현 선배님이 하셨던 도민준, '상속자들'의 이민호 선배님이 연기하셨던 김탄 역 해보고 싶었어요. 로맨스가 아무래도 여성분들에게 사랑받을 수 있는 작품이잖아요(웃음). 따뜻하고 감성적인 걸 좋아해서 그런 작품을 해보고 싶어요. 지금 시나리오도 열심히 보고 있죠."
여러 연기돌 중 재형의 롤 모델은 JYJ의 김재중이었다. 그의 말에 따르면 연기와 음악 두 가지 모두를 놓치고 싶지 않기 때문에.
"김재중 선배님이 롤 모델이에요. 작사, 작곡도 하시잖아요. 최근에 MBC '트라이앵글'을 봤는데, 배울 점이 많다고 생각했어요."
